Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, represented Pakistan at the FAO Global Conference for Actions on One Health in Agrifood Systems in Rome, Italy. Speaking at the opening plenary session, the minister highlighted that integrating animal, plant, environmental, and human health is vital for ensuring Pakistan’s long-term food security, livestock productivity, and rural livelihoods.
During his address, Minister Rana Tanveer outlined key national priorities and strategic goals:
- Resilient Livestock & Biosecurity: Emphasized disease prevention, responsible antimicrobial use, and upgraded veterinary services to safeguard public health and preserve agricultural productivity.
- Pastoral & Rural Support: Called for empowering pastoral communities and rangeland managers through better access to animal healthcare, feed, water, and market linkages.
- Food Safety & AMR Surveillance: Stressed the need for rigorous farm-to-table food safety protocols, paired with unified surveillance systems to monitor foodborne diseases and antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
- Women’s Empowerment: Highlighted women’s central role in household nutrition and livestock management, urging enhanced access to financial resources, technology, and market opportunities.
- Cross-Sectoral Collaboration: Reiterated that sustainable agrifood systems require seamless, inter-departmental coordination across human, animal, and environmental domains.
The three-day global summit brings together international policymakers and stakeholders to transition One Health principles into actionable, national-level solutions.
