Pakistan and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation are embarking on a major expansion of their long-standing partnership, looking beyond traditional public health initiatives to drive innovation in agriculture, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence.
The agreement to explore cooperation came during a high-level meeting between Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Gates Foundation Chair Bill Gates on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 2026).
Key Highlights of the Expanded Partnership
- Agricultural Modernization: Both sides agreed to explore opportunities in developing high-yield, climate-resilient seeds, advancing livestock genetics, and adopting cutting-edge agricultural technologies.
- Broader Technological Scope: Prime Minister Shehbaz highlighted Pakistan’s interest in leveraging the foundation’s expertise across public health, digital innovation, financial inclusion, and artificial intelligence.
- Farmer Capacity Building: Discussions centered on empowering local farmers through innovation, biotechnology research, and modern farming techniques.
Reaffirming the Fight Against Polio
While charting new territory in agri-tech and digital transformation, the leadership reaffirmed its core commitment to eradicating polio. Prime Minister Shehbaz thanked the foundation for its steadfast support, while Bill Gates commended the Prime Minister’s direct oversight and guidance to provincial governments in driving vaccination campaigns.
Describing the Gates Foundation as a “trusted partner in Pakistan’s socio-economic development,” Prime Minister Shehbaz extended an invitation to Bill Gates to visit Pakistan to further solidify these collaborative efforts.
