Driven by value addition, global promotion, and strategic branding, Pakistan’s pink rock salt exports surged to $36 million in FY26—up from $35 million in FY25. Export volumes saw a notable boost, jumping from 127,924 tonnes to over 148,000 tonnes as international demand for the natural mineral continued to rise.

Strategic Initiatives Driving Growth
- Securing Geographical Identity: To reclaim market identity from generic terms like “Himalayan Pink Salt,” Pakistan registered the mineral as a Geographical Indication (GI) under the name “Khewra Pink Rock Salt” in July 2022. Efforts are currently underway to secure international GI registration.
- Tackling Under-Invoicing: The government established a Minimum Export Price (MEP) of $130 per metric tonne to curb under-invoicing and ensure fair revenue collection.
- Dedicated Trade Classification: Through the Finance Bill 2023–24, authorities introduced a dedicated customs code (HS Code 2501.0021) to precisely track and regulate pink salt trade.
- Global Exposure: The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) showcased the mineral at top international trade shows, including Gulfood, Anuga, SIAL, and World Expo 2025 Osaka—where the Pakistan Pavilion was themed “Universe in a Grain of Salt.”
Vast Unmapped Potential
According to the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation (PMDC), the nation sits on over 65 million metric tonnes of rock salt reserves—with 36 million tonnes under direct PMDC management across the Salt Range and Kohat Saline Series. Boasting purity levels of up to 99%, the country remains uniquely positioned to capture high-value global markets as private sector exporters leverage the new national GI branding.
