The Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC) hosted the inaugural India edition of Palm Conversations International (PCI) 2026, convening international medical, scientific, and nutritional experts under the theme “Bioactive Power from the Palm: Reimagining Health for a World Facing Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).” Supported by the Indian Medical Association, the International Association of Dietitians for Metabolic Health and Nutrition, and the Oil Technologists’ Association of India, the summit spotlighted emerging evidence around palm-derived phytonutrients like tocotrienols and phenolics.

Key takeaways from the presented research include:

  • Nutritional Balance & Edible Oil Overuse: Per-capita edible oil consumption in India sits at approximately 23.5 kg annually—nearly double the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recommended level of 12 kg—underscoring an urgent need for overall dietary balance.
  • Cardiovascular & Functional Insights: A review screening 4,515 citations found no consistent link between palm oil consumption and heart disease, stroke, or cardiovascular mortality. Experts noted that palm oil’s natural semi-solid structure provides functional cooking stability without partial hydrogenation, eliminating the need for harmful industrial trans fats.
  • Encouraging Oncology Findings: Early-phase human studies showcased compelling results, including a 70% disease-stabilisation rate in a small Phase II trial involving recurrent ovarian cancer patients treated with delta-tocotrienol combined with bevacizumab.
  • Focus on NCD Risk Pathways: Research led by global experts examined the anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular properties of palm bioactives, while emphasizing that clinical applications remain an evolving field requiring further dosage and safety trials.

“Palm Conversations International provides a platform for open, evidence-based scientific dialogue,” stated Belvinder Sron, Chief Executive Officer of MPOC. “For Malaysia and India, it provides an opportunity to deepen collaboration in science, nutrition, healthcare, and innovation.”

Speakers reiterated that while palm-derived bioactives show strong research potential, they serve as complementary dietary factors rather than replacements for established NCD prevention and medical treatments.
