Autonomous Fields: China’s Grain Heartland Goes High-Tech

High-tech automation, aerial drones, and AI-driven machinery are transforming Heilongjiang, China’s primary agricultural engine, into a testbed for modern farming designed to reinforce both domestic food security and global agricultural supply chains.

The northeastern province, which has led China in grain production for 16 consecutive years, achieved a record-breaking crop yield of 82 million tonnes in 2025. This success is backed by a 99.28% comprehensive mechanization rate across plowing, seeding, and harvesting—the highest in the nation.

High-Tech Automation on the Black Soil

Heilongjiang now operates a nationwide lead of 676,000 intelligent farm machines, alongside 20 fully autonomous smart farms. Among the latest deployments is China’s first commercially scaled AI laser weeding robot, working alongside autonomous tractors across the province’s vast black-soil farmland.

Central to this technological transformation are local tech developers:

  • Precision Machinery: Harbin-based DEWO Technology specializes in full-cycle potato cultivation equipment. Its precision seeders, outfitted with real-time operational monitors and precision fertilization units, are tailored to boost crop yields and planting accuracy.
  • Aerial & Smart Irrigation: Huida Technology manufactures autonomous crop-protection drones and automated fertigation systems. Its heavy-payload spraying drone—priced around 40,000 yuan ($5,926)—can carry over 70 kg, treat vast fields in 10 minutes, and recharges to 80% capacity within 10 minutes.

International manufacturers are also capitalizing on the region’s scale. Global equipment giant Case New Holland (CNH) has operated a manufacturing hub in Harbin since 2014, serving both the Chinese domestic market and international demand.

Exporting Digital Farming Solutions

Heilongjiang’s agtech boom is extending well beyond China’s borders.

Huida Technology now exports smart agricultural drones to 60 countries across South America, Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe, including Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia, and Russia. Similarly, DEWO’s specialized potato planters are deployed across farms in Kazakhstan, Zimbabwe, and Peru, where integrated fertilization systems have helped local growers increase yields.

Looking Ahead: The 2026–2030 Roadmap

Following the equipment upgrades driven by the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025), provincial leaders are turning to next-generation technologies. Under the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), Heilongjiang plans to establish specialized industrial clusters centered on three key growth areas:

  1. Agricultural Robotics
  2. Next-Generation Smart Machinery
  3. The Low-Altitude Agricultural Economy
