In a major step toward boosting bilateral trade and agricultural innovation, a high-level United States business delegation met with Punjab Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani at the Civil Secretariat on Wednesday. The discussions focused on expanding investment opportunities, building robust business partnerships, and launching cooperative projects in Punjab’s vibrant agriculture and livestock sectors.

Punjab: Pakistan’s Agricultural Powerhouse

Welcoming the delegates, Minister Kirmani highlighted Punjab’s central role as Pakistan’s primary food basket, contributing roughly 80 percent of the nation’s total agricultural and food output.

He detailed the provincial government’s aggressive modernization strategy, which focuses on:

  • Financial Empowerment: Through the flagship Kissan Card initiative, farmers have received approximately Rs400 billion in loans over the past two years, significantly aiding in input purchases such as fertilizers.
  • Modern Mechanization & Irrigation: Under the PIVOT project, the province is equipping local farmers with state-of-the-art machinery and promoting highly efficient irrigation techniques to maximize per-acre crop yield.
  • Livestock Management: Massive upgrades are underway in animal identification, monitoring, vaccination, and disease prevention to enhance livestock productivity and health standards across the board.
